D800 questions and answers

Q: How is it for noise further up the ISO range?

I really can’t comment on high iso with the D800 as we shot at 100 and balanced our lighting with ambient daylight where poss. The video footage currently on the web suggests the camera strolls it in low light.

Q: For fashion work, what are your thoughts regarding the D800 vs. The D800E? Is the extra time eliminating moire in post worth it, or do you favor the standard D800?

A: Personally I’ll be buying the D800E. Moire has been a fact of life using medium format for years. It’s something you deal with IF it appears. I’d prefer to have the extra res.

Q: How is the handling of the raw files? Is it possible to process those with a Macbook Pro and 8GB memory or would you need more than that?

A: An MBP with 8 gig will cope with the files in my opinion. Will it be super fast…no. These questions are always ‘relative’ though. If you’re gonna shoot the Olympic 100 meter final and try to be first on the wires, you might want something a little faster :) the price of bigger files is YOUR time over your budget. 8gig MBPs will handle these files. You’ll know when you see your progress bar whether they are being handled fast enough.

Q: Are we really going to get that much extra sharpness out of the d800e for fashion/beauty? or is it better to spend the extra $300 on other things (i.e. the battery grip) I am wondering if after a bit of post work (sharpening) a d800 file will give close to the same results as the d800e. I have pre-ordered both cameras and dont know which one to cancel :(

A: I’d say keep an eye on the web reports and look at as many sample images as you can. You’ll know when the time comes which file you need for your market.

Q: Were they taken with the D800 or the D800E?

A: D800
