John Wright Launches the Nikon D800

Text

I am delighted to have been involved with the worldwide launch of the highly anticipated Nikon D800 in London yesterday. Having been the first in Britain to use this camera at the close of last year and known how fantastic the image resolution, pixel count and full HD video features are, it’s great to now know it’s officially announced and it will be in my equipment room soon.

Here are some of the stills from the fashion shoot I did with the D800 in London in December:

To have 36 megapixels and full HD wrapped up in the familiar Nikon body format and at a price point of around £2,500 is an absolute gift. With the arrival of this camera and my D4 I’m looking forward to using a two camera set up with my moving image work.

After a lot of speculation online about the features of the D800 over the last few months, I am pleased to say that the actual specification: 36.3 megapixels and full HD, is fantastic and a testament to Nikon’s impeccable engineering.

I’ve used a few ‘entry level pro’/serious enthusiast camera bodies over the years, normally, there’s a tangible drop in build quality between them and the top of the range models. This really isn’t quite so discernible with the D800. In the hand it feels like my NIKON X series cameras. Of course the fact it has an attachable drive gives away that it’s a smaller body but all the same, this is a serious piece of kit. Personally, I can’t wait to take delivery. The D800 bridges the gap between the shooting stills and moving images and both processes really marry together well. With changing technology and market expectations, on jobs I will often be asked to shoot both stills and video and the superb quality and usability of the D800 makes this all the easier.

As part of the launch event I was honoured to give a presentation to the assembled media at London’s Glazier’s Hall. Conversations at the event were entirely focused on the fact that Nikon really have delivered an incredible package of stills resolution and full HD video at an incredibly reasonable price.

It’s such an honour to be the photographer chosen to launch such a camera on the worldwide stage. I hope those of you who go on to buy and use the D800 find it as effective and user-friendly as I have.

I’ll be posting the behind the scenes video of me and my team in action with the D800 soon, watch this space. To see the images from the shoot go to www.johnwrightphoto.com.

We had the pleasure of shooting the impeccably groomed, and extremely talented Harry Lloyd for GQ’s February Man of the Month.
Harry is a descendent of the legendary Charles Dickens and he also nailed his performance as Herbert Pocket in Great Expectations which was broadcast on BBC One over the Christmas break. He is also on the big screen as a young Denis Thatcher in the critically acclaimed (and also Oscar-tipped) The Iron Lady. Whatever your political leanings, Harry does an excellent job and is a British actor to be proud of.
If you’re subscribed to the GQ iPad app, you can also view the Man of the Month interview we filmed and edited for GQ.
Harry was wearing Tom Ford and Burberry in his shoot and was groomed using Chanel products.

This is going to be TEENAGE WILDLIFE’S next single release! ‘LONG GONE’ is a blend of soaring female soul vocals with some African choirs and a supersweet chorus :) A steady hip hop rythm and some cool production tricks have brought together a cool track as our first itunes/spotify release of 2012.

We’ve just updated our fashion portfolio with these images from our THREE GRACES inspired shoot. Photographically we wanted to create images that encapsulated the aesthetic of painting through use of the set, backdrop and lighting. We took reference from Canova’s famous neoclassical marble sculpture ‘The Three Graces’

You can see the rest of the images by visiting the fashion section on John’s site johnwrightphoto.com

The three graces from mythology represent the three ‘charities’ daughters of Zeus who are said to represent beauty, charm and joy. Stylist Alex Reid used some of the latest collections from lingerie brands such as Wundervoll, Elle Macpherson, Wolford and La Perla using pieces that would work within the thematic setting whilst also adding a contemporary edge to the shots through her choice of colour, style and design of lingerie pieces. The lingerie was then accessorised with pieces from Erickson Beamon, Lara Bohinc and Mawi. Make-up artist Sara Raeburn experimented with colour washes and a light palette foundation on the models skin with reference to the painterly quality of the figures she had seen depicted in various versions of ‘The Three Graces’. Hair stylist Enzo Volpe created intricate plaits and waves to add texture through the hair which were then dressed with garlands and flowers to bring through the ethereal setting of the woodland.

Our recent cover shoot with Kelly Rowland for The Times Magazine.

We shot with the multi talented Kelly Rowland in London’s Spring Studios recently during her preparations for her performances with Tinie Tempah at Wembley. Her hectic schedule saw her rehearsing for the live shows, mentoring her acts on ITV1’s The X Factor and promoting her new album all in the same few weeks.

Recent images from our fashion portfolio, shooting the current androgyny trend with the creative talents of stylist Karen Williams, Krystel Gohel on make up and Sherman Hawthorne on hair and of course our wonderful models Eva Doll from Premier and Egle from Nevs.

Androgyny is back in a big way this winter but let us not forget the original pioneers of the style. Patti Smith, ‘the Godmother of Punk’, took a more laid back approach to androgyny with oversized shirts and a relaxed stance while Grace Jones took eighties power dressing to another level, with sharp shoulders to match her amazing cheekbones. Karen incorporated a bit of both sides in the styling for this shoot, with some great pieces from Hugo Boss, Nicole Farhi Mainline and Paul Smith amongst other great labels, with some kick-ass shoes from Kurt Geiger.

More contemporary fans of the look include the Academy Award Winning actress Tilda Swinton, the extremely talented Janelle Monae and of course, Lady Gaga, but our girls Eva and Egle might give them a run for their money in the fashion stakes…in our completely un-biased opinion, of course!

Photography, is a VERY serious business! It’s cut throat and it’s fickle. Careers are built and lost on accidents of good and bad fortune. It’s important to remember that whatever else you do…You’ve seriously got to take every single opportunity you get to make a spectacle of yourself in the street and laugh out loud till your sides hurt :) Like we just did in our little video here:

So happy to be working with the phenomenal Alicia Keys. We shot these images deep in the bowels of The Royal Albert Hall for Ms Keys herself. You’ll be seeing them published extensively in the near future I’m sure.
